Blooms and Vines
This bluebell vignette was painted en plein air in the bluebell woods near where I live. I haven’t seen a more beautiful display of bluebells anywhere else! I think it’s a mix of the beautiful purple blue flowers as far as the eye can see and the stunning beech trees with twisty vines growing up them and their young vibrant green leaves casting shadows dancing on the trunks.
It’s a place that feels magical.. you just know fairies live amongst the flowers. For me, photos don’t capture just how etherial it feels to be in there. Being able to take my paints in and get the right shade of purple and green and paint how the light dances across the leaves and flowers is the only way to really recreate what it’s like being there.
This painting was painted as a vignette on natural colored Irish linen so you can see and enjoy the linen around the painting. I love the natural color of linen - a material that has been painted on for 100s of years by the great masters and also has a rich history in Ireland. My intention by leaving it bare is to celebrate the material and I also love how it blends with the trees yet lets the greenery and flowers pop.
Painting in the bluebell wood has become a tradition for me, one I look forward to each year.
